Motherland and Riposte Magazine joined forces to bring you a panel debate, on the subject of how we raise boys followed by brunch by Hoi Polloi, at London’s Ace Hotel. Speakers included WAH Nails founder Sharmadean Reid, spoken word poet James Massiah, Motherland founder Charlotte Philby, and chair of Action Aid, Margaret Casely-Hayford.
The talk, on Sunday 19 July 2015, explored what it means to be a boy in 2015, and how we as parents and a society can help grow our sons to be the best versions of themselves. It was spawned from an essay written by Charlotte Philby for Riposte #4, on the issue of raising boys – inspired by this quote from Nigerian feminist: “We do a great disservice to boys in how we raise them. We stifle the humanity of boys. We define masculinity in a very narrow way. Masculinity is a hard, small cage, and we put boys inside this cage.”
