My daughter Marnie is two, and her new thing is to ask for “a song please, mummy”. However, if something isn’t fitting her mood she is very quick to demand “something else, mummy”. (Come to think of it she seems to say that about a lot of things). Her repertoire is getting quite diverse, but it made me laugh when I heard her singing to herself “Let it go”. Not on my playlist. That must have been her dad…

Stomping tonight on the Pennsylvania-Alabama border – John Fahey
The only song that would get both us and Marnie to sleep at the same time when she was a baby. I give thanks for this song.

Mahna Mahna – The Muppets
This one makes all of us happy… even at 5am.

A Little Respect – Erasure
Family dance time.

1234 Feist
(The Sesame Street version, of course.)

Go your own way – Fleetwood Mac
Because I want her to…

Octopuses Garden – The Beatles
This one is usually requested for some pre-dinner time dancing. She even has her own CD from a book of it and insists I play it from that.

I want to be like you – Jungle Book
I like listening to this as much as she does.

Over and Over – Hot chip
Good for jumping.

The Lion Sleeps tonight – The Tokens
Wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh, wimoweh…

Hoppe Hoppe Reiter – German kids song
I have no idea what this means, but Marnie’s dad is half German and plays her weird stuff like this to teach her the language. Apparently it’s about a jockey falling over and being eaten by birds, or something.

Santa Claus is coming to town – Bruce Springsteen
As I am writing this on the 22 December, this one has been very relevant the last few weeks.

Inheritance Tracks

I’ll be your Mirror – Velvet Underground and Nico
Sung at our wedding by our gorgeous friend, Sian from Eaux.

Lime Tree Arbour – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Because I am Australian and he is my favourite melancholic Aussie.

There is a light that never goes out – The Smiths
When I first came to London I was the only one to not know the words and I want her to know them.
