For thought-provoking beauty, visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. As well as extensive grounds dotted with sculpture, this is where you’ll find the work of Chinese artist Ai WeiWei. It’s his first British exhibition since
Sunflower Seeds took over the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2010, and worth seeing. A vocal spokesperson for democracy, the artist’s passport has been confiscated by Chinese authorities, but still he continues to produce powerful art. Works here include an installation inside the YSP’s newly refurbished 18
th Century chapel, called
Fairytale-1001, and
Iron Tree, a six-metre high sculpture in the chapel’s courtyard. The exhibition is accompanied by poetry readings from respected poet Ai Qing, Ai WeiWei’s father.
All exhibitions free; parking charges apply.
