Silk shirt from a selection at Red Ruby Rouge
Red Ruby Rouge
This is a find. It’s a hub for emerging designers, picked by the creative team at RRR, who have a mission to choose clothes with style and substance. The evolving collection – hand-printed silk T-shirts from Brooklyn, suede bags from Uruguay, jewellery from across the globe, you get the idea – is cutting edge, unique, and wearable. The cherry on the top is that it’s pitched at affordable prices (and standard delivery to the UK is free). Uh-oh…
KidO Floating Mini Ducks from Niddle Noddle
Niddle Noddle
Somehow, the people behind Niddle Noddle have managed to make a website feel magical. Quality children’s toys and games, clothing, vintage products, stationary, books… there are many pretenders to the throne, but this one is the real deal. The co-founders (one Scottish, the other Scandinavian) find brands that haven’t hit the mainstream, and things that are hand-created and one of a kind. They keep things bijou, so stock is always changing. And – music to our ears – they keep the prices reasonable. It’s an antidote to mass marketing, with a joyous spirit.
Ceramic poodle lamp, £195, from Caravan
Caravan
A glorious collection of unusual objects for the home. This is a lovingly curated online shop (there’s a bricks and mortar one, too, for appointments) by Emily Chalmers, interiors stylist and author, and she knows a thing or two about unique products. Take for instance the pineapple wall sconce, made especially for Caravan from a reproduction of a vintage design. Or maybe concrete candlesticks, ceramic poodle lamps – so ugly they’re amazing (see picture for details) – or swan vases are more your thing? Look no further.
‘Little Notes of Appreciation’ set, £9.50, from Bread & Jam
Bread & Jam
This is a lovely company, made up of a small team of creatives who make beautiful stationary products, and gifts. Their boxed cards, prints, and notebooks feature whimsical phrases, Letterpress, and good design. They say their aim is to raise a smile – even a little one – and they certainly succeed in that. Keep an eye out for the ‘Little Notes of Appreciation’ set (£9.50, pictured): every stationary cupboard should have one.
Sheffield steel scissors, £15, from Merchant & Mills
Merchant & Mills
Drapers with a twist. The attractive website (that lives up to the real thing, based in Rye) is stacked to the virtual rooftop with well-made goods, and functional design. Sheffield steel scissors, cloth, oilskin bags and notebooks… they make measuring tape, pins and twine seem like the most beautiful things. Everything is packaged to perfection, and shipped anywhere in the world (at flat rates). If you know someone who loves to make (or indeed drink: they have a nice one-off mug collection), this is the place to go.
